Hearing the words “I’m pregnant” can leave you wondering what to do next. If this pregnancy was unexpected, you may question how best to support your partner.

At Positive Options, we are here for women and men facing unexpected pregnancies. You don’t have to figure this out on your own.

To learn more about the resources and support available to you and your partner, schedule an appointment today by texting us at 616-421-9696 or calling us at 616-546-0610.

1: Acknowledge the Situation

Your partner may be feeling scared, overwhelmed, or uncertain. One of the most important things you can do is acknowledge her feelings and let her know you are present. Simply listening without judgment can mean more than you realize.

Recognizing that this is a challenging time while offering reassurance communicates that you’re in this together.

2: Ask How You Can Support Her

Every woman responds differently to an unexpected pregnancy. Some may know exactly how they’d like their partner to help, whether by attending an appointment, helping with practical needs, or just being emotionally present. Others may need time to process.

Ask her how you can support her, and remind her you are available when she’s ready to talk.

3: Explore Options Together

While your partner ultimately makes the pregnancy decision, you can walk alongside her by learning about each option. Listening, asking questions, and being a steady presence can help her feel less alone.

At Positive Options, we provide education about parenting, adoption, and abortion procedures. We also offer support specifically for men, so you can better understand your role and how to process your feelings.

4: Take Care of Yourself

Supporting someone through an unexpected pregnancy is not easy. Make sure you also take steps to care for yourself, whether that’s talking with a trusted friend, seeking guidance from a mentor, or simply giving yourself space to process.

When you’re caring for your own emotional health, you’ll be better equipped to support your partner in a healthy, constructive way.

You’re Not Alone

At Positive Options, we believe men deserve support, too. We offer free and confidential services, including personalized mentoring with male advocates to answer your specific questions. You and your partner don’t have to face this situation alone.

You can schedule your appointment at Positive Options today by texting us at 616-421-9696 or calling us at 616-546-0610. We’re here to walk with both of you, providing education and encouragement every step of the way.

Positive Options does not provide or refer for abortions.
