If your partner is unexpectedly pregnant, it’s normal to feel unsure of what to do or how to support her. The good news is that you don’t have to have all of the answers right away. If you need to, take a day or two to process the news before having any important conversations with your partner.
There are many meaningful ways you can support her, so keep reading to learn more.
Provide Emotional Support
While you may feel stressed or overwhelmed, she may feel especially vulnerable as she carries the pregnancy. Providing emotional support can look like providing a listening ear, offering reassurance, showing patience, and being fully present as she talks through her thoughts and feelings.
This simple approach can go a long way in helping her feel like she is not alone on this journey.
Provide Practical Support
Look for simple, meaningful ways to ease her daily workload. If she has cravings, offer to pick them up or have them delivered. If she’s comfortable with it, attend the doctor’s appointments and pay attention to what the doctor says.Â
Pay attention to her physical needs and step in where you can, such as refilling her water, helping with meals, or taking care of chores so she can rest.
Schedule an Ultrasound
One of the first things you can do is encourage her to schedule a no-cost obstetric ultrasound at our center.Â
This will confirm important details, such as whether the pregnancy is still progressing as well as the gestational age, which can help you estimate her due date.
Whether you’re on the same page about the pregnancy or still figuring things out, this step can give you both answers (such as the estimated due date) so you can move forward with more confidence.
