Roe v. Wade Overturned: Separating Fact From Fiction

Updated: May 6

Since the overturning of Roe v. Wade in June of 2022, much has changed in the states regarding abortion. If you’re considering abortion during an unplanned pregnancy, we want to give you the facts about abortion laws.

Get the answers you need to make an informed decision.

Abortion After Roe v. Wade

The end of Roe v. Wade meant that states now had the power to decide their abortion laws and restrictions. There was no longer a federal law allowing for abortion.

Abortion has been restricted in some states, such as Texas, West Virginia, and Louisiana, since the ruling in June 2022. Other states have been removing restrictions on abortion, while others remain undecided pending legal battles and upcoming state elections.

Is Abortion Legal in MI?

Abortion is currently legal in the state of Michigan. At this time, there is no law indicating a gestational limit for abortion in our state.

Michigan’s current abortion laws require women to receive counseling along with a 24-hour waiting period requirement. If you are under the age of 18, a parent or legal guardian must give permission.

Ectopic Pregnancy & Miscarriage

There has been confusion across the country about whether abortion laws impact access to ectopic pregnancy and miscarriage treatments. However, both ectopic and miscarriage medical procedures are NOT abortion procedures.

An abortion procedure terminates an existing, viable pregnancy. Ectopic pregnancy treatment and miscarriage treatment remove or treat non-viable pregnancies.

Miscarriage and ectopic pregnancy treatments will continue to be legal across the country, as restrictions would cause ill health effects to women.
