How Does the Abortion Pill Work?
The abortion pill is a two-step process involving two different drugs: mifepristone and misoprostol.
Mifepristone, the first medication, blocks progesterone, a hormone needed to sustain a pregnancy, causing the pregnancy to stop progressing. About 24–48 hours later, misoprostol is taken to cause the uterus to contract and expel the pregnancy along with the uterine lining and other tissue.
What Are the Physical Consequences of the Abortion Pill?
According to Mayo Clinic, potential physical complications of a medication abortion can include an incomplete abortion that may require follow-up surgical treatment.
If the drugs do not work as expected, an ongoing pregnancy may also occur. Other complications include heavy or prolonged bleeding, infection, fever, and digestive discomfort such as nausea, vomiting, or diarrhea.
How Does the Abortion Pill Affect My Mental Health?
While there is no single way to predict how abortion may affect someone emotionally, some researchers across perspectives agree that abortion has been associated with elevated rates of certain mental health challenges. For some women, the experience may contribute to emotional struggles.
How Do I Know If I’m Eligible for the Abortion Pill?
The FDA approves the abortion pill through 10 weeks (70 days) of pregnancy.
An ultrasound is the most reliable way to determine how far along you are and confirm important pregnancy details, including viability and whether the pregnancy is located in the uterus.
We offer no-cost ultrasounds (and pregnancy tests) at Positive Option, where you can get these important pregnancy details.
