Can Women Die if They Can’t Have an Abortion?

Updated: Dec 21, 2023

Since abortion is a pregnancy option rather than a life-threatening medical treatment, a woman can’t die due to restrictions on abortion. A woman has full access to life-saving medical treatment for pregnancy complications.

Pregnancy Complications Treatment Vs. Abortion

Ectopic Pregnancy

Some women experience ectopic pregnancies, which require additional medical care. An ectopic pregnancy happens when a fertilized egg implants in a location other than the uterus, such as a fallopian tube. It can be a dangerous condition and requires immediate medical attention and treatment.

It’s important to clarify that an abortion procedure does NOT treat an ectopic pregnancy, and abortion will not be needed.

Miscarriage

Some women also experience miscarriage. The Mayo Clinic shares that about 10-20% of all known pregnancies end in miscarriage. With this type of pregnancy complication, women may need medical treatment for the pregnancy tissue to pass.

Neither a medical or surgical abortion procedure treats a miscarriage. If you are pregnant and experience a miscarriage, a medical provider will be able to help assist you with the needed medical treatment and attention.
