Did you find out your friend is experiencing an unexpected pregnancy? Maybe you’re not sure how to support her right now. What do you say? Should you give her space? Having these questions and concerns coming up already shows how much you care as her friend.
While every pregnancy situation is unique, here are some tips on how to support your friend.
Give Her Some Time to Process
Most people need at least a couple of days to process the overwhelming news of an unexpected pregnancy. This reality changes your friend’s future in a moment, and she may need time to process it by herself before she's ready to talk fully.
Reach Out & Listen
Depending on how your friend processes difficult times, she may be vocal about her needs or not vocal enough. Reach out to her and ask her what she needs. It’s always better to be over-communicative than under.
She may ask to talk to you and confide in you as a friend. Do your best to listen and not respond immediately, even if you do not have all the answers. Your friend needs a listening ear and to know that you care. Your time shows that.
If you haven’t heard from your friend in a while, check in on her or drop off her favorite food. Take her out to her favorite restaurant or do a movie night in. Any small gesture will show that you truly care.
