When Can Pregnancy be Detected?

Are you wondering how early you can have an ultrasound? The Cleveland Clinic shares that an ultrasound can detect pregnancy as early as 6 weeks of gestation, though a heartbeat may not be detected until about 8 weeks of gestation.

Typically, an initial ultrasound isn’t scheduled until about 7 to 8 weeks of gestation. Certain providers prefer them to be scheduled later.

How Do Ultrasounds Work?

While a positive pregnancy test can indicate pregnancy, only an ultrasound can confirm if your pregnancy is viable (progressing). If you are considering an abortion, you’ll want to know how far along you are to determine which type of procedure you can have. Ultrasounds can also alert you to potential complications.

In early pregnancy, a transvaginal ultrasound is performed to offer the clearest images. With this scan, a wand-like device called a transducer is inserted gently into the vagina. Later in pregnancy, abdominal ultrasounds are performed, with the transducer moving over your abdomen.
